SS-31 (Elamipretide, MTP-131) is a synthetic cell-permeable tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂, where Dmt represents 2',6'-dimethyltyrosine. It selectively targets and binds cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilising the electron transport chain supercomplexes and reducing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production. As a research tool, SS-31 is widely used in studies of mitochondrial biology, oxidative stress, cardioprotection, and mitochondrial membrane dynamics in vitro. It is produced via solid-phase peptide synthesis incorporating non-standard amino acid residues.
