P21 (also referenced as P021) is a synthetic tetrapeptide derived from a short epitope within the signalling domain of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF). Unlike full-length CNTF, which presents experimental limitations related to molecular size and immunogenicity, P21 is designed as a compact molecular probe for mechanistic investigation of CNTF-associated pathways in vitro. As a research tool, P21 is studied in neuroscience and cognitive biology research for its roles in neurogenesis modulation, BDNF expression, synaptic plasticity-associated signalling, and hippocampal cell culture models.
