Encoded within the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene, Humanin is a 21-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide that challenged the prevailing assumption that functional open reading frames within mitochondrial rRNA genes were non-existent. In vitro studies using neuronal cell lines exposed to apoptotic stimuli have investigated whether Humanin modulates Bax translocation to mitochondrial membranes and subsequent cytochrome c release through direct protein-protein interaction.
