Humanin is a 21 amino acid peptide encoded within the 16S ribosomal RNA region of the mitochondrial genome, making it one of the first identified mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs). It acts as an endogenous cytoprotective factor studied in preclinical research for its neuroprotective effects against amyloid-beta toxicity, its anti-apoptotic signalling through STAT3 and AMPK pathways, and its roles in mitochondrial function and metabolic regulation in vitro.
