What is MOTS-c?

A synthetic 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA, MOTS-c is studied as one of the first known mitochondrial-derived peptides. Research focuses on its movement to the cell nucleus and its regulation of metabolism through the AMPK energy-sensing pathway.

  • Studied for its regulation of metabolism through the AMPK pathway.
  • Investigated in research models for nuclear translocation and gene regulation.
  • Examined as one of the first known mitochondrial-derived peptides.
  • Used as a research tool to study metabolic signalling.

For research use only. Not intended for human use.

Encoded within the mitochondrial genome, MOTS-c represents a rare class of mitochondrial-derived peptide that has opened a novel research frontier in retrograde mitochondrial signalling. Also known as Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of 12S rRNA-c, this 16-amino acid peptide has the sequence MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR and an approximate molecular weight of 1817 g/mol. Produced via solid-phase peptide synthesis.

In vitro studies have investigated whether Mitochondrial ORF 12S rRNA-c depletes intracellular 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and drives endogenous AICAR accumulation, thereby activating AMPK through an indirect metabolite-mediated mechanism. In vivo rodent exercise physiology models have explored whether exogenous MOTS-c administration alters skeletal muscle AMPK phosphorylation status and downstream ACC/mTORC1 signalling.

Manufactured in a quality-controlled laboratory to a guaranteed purity of 98% or above. Every batch undergoes independent third-party testing using HPLC and MS-UPLC analysis before dispatch. Vials are vacuum sealed and stored in a temperature-controlled, monitored cold storage system. A batch-specific Certificate of Analysis is available on request.

Sold strictly for in vitro research purposes only. Not for human consumption. Intended for use by qualified researchers in laboratory settings only.
