ACTH 1-39 (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, full-length) is a synthetic 39 amino acid peptide identical in sequence to endogenous human corticotropin, which is produced in the anterior pituitary gland by cleavage of the precursor proopiomelanocortin (POMC). As the natural ligand for melanocortin receptor subtypes MC1R through MC5R — principally MC2R on the adrenal cortex — ACTH 1-39 is a well-characterised reference compound used in studies of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, melanocortin receptor pharmacology, and adrenal signalling pathways in vitro.
