What is AICAR?
A cell-permeable nucleoside rather than a peptide, AICAR is studied as a tool for activating a key cellular energy switch. Research focuses on how it converts inside cells to a molecule that mimics low energy and activates AMP-activated protein kinase.
- Studied for its activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK).
- Investigated in research models for cellular energy-sensing pathways.
- Examined for its conversion to an AMP-mimetic inside cells.
- Used as a research tool to study metabolic and mitochondrial signalling.
For research use only. Not intended for human use.
Unlike peptide-based compounds, AICAR is a small molecule nucleotide analogue that has become one of the most widely used pharmacological tools in AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) research. Also known as AICA Ribonucleotide or Acadesine (CAS 2627-69-2), this compound carries the molecular formula C9H14N4O8 and a molecular weight of 338.21 g/mol. Upon cellular uptake, AICA Ribonucleotide is phosphorylated to ZMP, an AMP mimetic that allosterically activates AMPK.
In vitro studies in hepatocyte and skeletal muscle cell lines have used AICA Ribonucleotide to characterise AMPK-mediated phosphorylation of downstream substrates including ACC, mTORC1 and ULK1. In vivo rodent models have investigated tissue-specific AMPK activation following Acadesine administration, examining differential ZMP accumulation across hepatic, skeletal and cardiac tissues.
Manufactured in a quality-controlled laboratory to a guaranteed purity of 98% or above. Every batch undergoes independent third-party testing using HPLC and MS-UPLC analysis before dispatch. Vials are vacuum sealed and stored in a temperature-controlled, monitored cold storage system. A batch-specific Certificate of Analysis is available on request.
Sold strictly for in vitro research purposes only. Not for human consumption. Intended for use by qualified researchers in laboratory settings only.
